The Kent Coast Networker, designed by British Rail Engineering Limited and ABB, were built by Metro-Cammell. The Class 465/2, Class 465/9, and Class 466 were soon fitted with GEC Alsthom's traction system.

The Class 465/2 and Class 466 (120km/h, 1073kW continuous) motors are self-ventilated SCIMs tested up to 3500RPM. However, the Class 365 (otherwise ordered from ABB in 1993 as the dual voltage Class 465/3 for 160km/h, 1256kW continuous) traction motors don't have fan blowers and aren't actively air cooled whatsoever. They use forced oil cooling and use the ambient airflow across the frame as a sink (OFAN) for an extra 180kW of continuous output than with Class 465 motors.
