This is Lecture 14 of a world civilizations series, tracing the rise of the Roman Republic. Starting from Rome's legendary founding in 753 BC, the lecture follows Rome's growth from a small Latin kingdom on the Tiber to a dominant Italian power, rivaling the Etruscans and competing with Carthage for control of Sicily. Key figures include the legendary general Hannibal Barca and Lucius Brutus, who overthrew the monarchy and founded the Republic. Four classes are devoted to the Republic before moving on to the Empire.
