It’s worth noting that BBSW doesn’t just mechanically follow the cash rate. There are additional “frictions” or amplifiers:
Hedging costs for fixed-rate liabilities make the effective funding cost for banks more sensitive to BBSW changes once rates are rising. During a tightening phase, these hedging costs add meaningfully to funding costs.
Term premia and credit risk / market sentiment: BBSW embeds a premium for short-term credit risk and term premium; when banks or investors demand more compensation (due to perceived higher risk or uncertainty), BBSW can rise more than just in line with cash rate.
Wholesale-funding supply/demand distortions: If banks reduce deposits or rely more on market funding (e.g. bank bills), demand for short-term bills goes up — driving up BBSW independent of the RBA’s rate.
