A setting of text by Felix Lichnowsky, Liszt’s Die Zelle in Nonnenwerth (“The Cloister in Nonnenwerth”) was first composed in 1841 and published two years later. As Nonnenwerth was to be Liszt's and d'Agoult's last home together, it is of little surprise that this final piano version, composed around 1880, so clearly projects a mood of deep nostalgia while eliciting a sense of both tender reminiscence and regret, over what eventually turned out to be a miserable relationship. Frequently lingering on captivating sonorities, Liszt conveys the sense of an improvisation by a musician whose consciousness is flooded by reminiscences.
