This is Lecture 1 of a Civilization series, exploring why humanity transitioned from hunter-gatherer societies to agriculture. The traditional paradigm suggests farming created food surpluses, enabling specialization — leaders, priests, artists — and ultimately modernity. But archaeological and anthropological evidence complicates this 「progress narrative.」 Hunter-gatherers were not simply primitive survivors, and the rise of agriculture was neither inevitable nor an unambiguous improvement. This lecture challenges the standard story and invites you to rethink what 「civilization」 truly means.
