These new inverters that they're fitting to the trains are using this same technology made for machines - trains are machines too, at the end of the day. We see in this video the use of 1000Hz bipolar DPWM, 1000Hz unipolar DPWM, 2000Hz unipolar DPWM, and what appears to be SHE7 (at 60mph in this instance). It's back to asynchronous when coasting - it's just really broadband due to the PWM process.

This is like with the Class 755. The only difference is that the voltage supply for the Class 755, while using its engine, will of course be much lower than the line supply from the overheads. As a BMU, it will also have its generator/alternator loaded. The inverter continues to modulate asynchronously and discontinuously more than the occassional switch to a synchronous mode. The Class 755 will also use the brake chopper while driving with the engine - there's no where to dissipate the massive amount of power other than a bank of innocent and unsuspecting resistors.
