Adelaide is one of the finest of Beethoven’s early works, amounting really to a concert aria with piano, with two contrasting sections which follow a poem of unrequited love by Friedrich Matthison—Liszt's transcription typically comes in 3 versions, the last of which is played here and is dated from 1847. In keeping with the generosity of spirit of Beethoven’s piece, Liszt’s sound world is rich and full, the compensation for the absent voice made by enlarging the texture, and an interpolated cadenza—one of Liszt's best—makes for a highly charged atmosphere and climax. Anticipating that some pedant somewhere might be profoundly disturbed by the aforementioned cadenza (which is by the way, "ad lib."), we find a humorous mention of it by Liszt in a letter to Breitkopf & Härtel, dated 1841: "...have it printed in small notes without taking away anything from the present edition, so that the purists can play the integral text only, if the commentary is displeasing to them."

I just found i have left comment in andrei's video but i don't have impression on this song.(it's so weird) Recently it has been my daily "repertoire" during my night self study period! Transcribed from Beethoven's song, Beethoven's spirit still remains. But more lisztian elements were added, the artful cadenza, the thickness of texture..I don't know what the original lyrics about, but i surmise it is about farewell(?just my personal feeling)I love this piece so much, also, a good background music for studying that will make you feel happy.
