Liszt: Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, S172a
Performers: Kálmán Dráfi, Wojciech Waleczek
When Leslie Howard described the history of Liszt’s Harmonies poétiques et religieuses as “long and complex”, that was something of an understatement. Originally inspired by the 1830 publication of Lamartine’s four books of poetry under the same title, Liszt’s interpretation began as a single piece (S154) in 1834; to keep it simple, various works were then spawned which would either be discarded or revised for the S173 Harmonies, but before that, there was an initial cycle of eleven pieces (S172a) dated from 1847, which was quite different from its final version. All the works here have a Apollonianly gravitas and religious unity that is missing in the more incongruous 1853 cycle, and there is overall, a greater aesthetic homogeneity.
