The version read when i was little says Jack was eaten the first time he climbed up the beanstalk.He had not stolen anything and climbed up all for curiosity. He in my version is a very poor boy that has been treated horribly by his mother and suffered from poverty.Stealing might not be caused by greediness but poverty.
