关于雷维尔学院：

雷维尔学院由已故的罗杰・雷维尔博士（1901-1991）创立并以其名字命名。雷维尔博士在20世纪50年代初担任斯克里普斯海洋研究所所长，并在20世纪50年代末加州大学圣地亚哥分校的创建过程中发挥了关键作用。他在获取土地、获得加州大学董事会的批准以及招募大学的创始教员方面都做出了重要贡献。
雷维尔博士秉持的教育理念是“to build a foundation which would become one of the great universities of the world.”加州大学校长克拉克·克尔（Clark Kerr）盛赞雷维尔学院通识教育的广泛性，称其“unmatched in the UC system and equaled by few prestigious private schools in the country,”而这些通识教育课程正是由雷维尔博士亲自挑选的教师团队制定的。1964年，当加州大学圣地亚哥分校的首批本科生在雷维尔学院入学时，雷维尔博士已前往哈佛大学，担任人口控制中心主任。
1975年回到加州大学圣地亚哥分校后，雷维尔博士强调了语言在通识教育中的重要性。跨学科人文课程确保学生精通英语；外语必修课使学生有机会了解其他文化，通常通过辅修或海外学习项目来实现；而微积分必修课则提供了科学的语言，这在当时并不常见。要求所有学生学习人文、社会科学、美术和语言的理念在当时并不罕见（尽管在20世纪60年代末和70年代初，这种理念在大多数大学校园中消失了），但要求学习微积分和真正的科学课程在当时是独一无二的，而且至今仍然如此。雷维尔博士坚信，本科教育应该兼顾广度和深度。他作为一名成功的科学家和公共政治家的职业生涯，体现了这种教育的智慧，并为以他名字命名的雷维尔学院及其毕业生树立了榜样。
