This lecture applies the 「oceanic currents of history」 framework to Chinese civilization, asking why China — once the world leader in technology and culture — stopped innovating after the Song Dynasty around 1200 CE. Starting from the Yellow River agricultural heartland, the class traces Chinese dynastic history and interrogates whether Western-derived historical models hold true in the Chinese context, exploring the twilight of the Middle Kingdom.
