Description
The literature review is central to any academic research – whether as a stand-alone article or part of a research article or a student's dissertation. In this public lecture, Martin Eppler will delve into the genre of literature review, focusing on current and novel practices for visualizing the extant literature and the review findings. After outlining the benefits for using visualization in literature reviews in terms of relevance and rigor, he will delve into current practices for visualizing the various elements of the literature review (e.g. the methods, field, and findings). He will then introduce the revpatterns, which he defines as "widely and easily useable as well as useful graphic literature synthesis templates for a review corpus." Based on Christopher Alexander's (1977) pattern language, the revpatterns synthesize problems commonly encountered in reviewing the academic literature, along with a repertoire of visual solutions that can be usefully leveraged to interpret and address such problems. The lecture will include a wide range of visual examples, a gallery of visual templates, and a preliminary typology of revpatterns. The aim is to move beyond current visualization practices (e.g. PRISMA) to achieve greater impact and illuminate scientific discourse.
