英国-澳大利亚联合研制的“马尔卡拉”导弹于 20 世纪 50 年代问世，旨在远距离对抗苏联重型坦克。在 50 年代末期，防护性最强的坦克是实验型的“279”号坦克，其装备了极厚的倾斜装甲。

HESH弹药会在装甲内部产生剥落现象，这是因为冲击波在后表面反射所致。这种效果比标准的HE弹药要强烈得多，因为HESH弹头中的炸药会均匀分布在装甲表面，并与装甲直接接触。

考虑到毛子1963年就拿出了初代T-64......实际上碎甲弹的高光时刻没有很长，考虑到普及需要时间，再加上小口径碎甲弹根本没啥用，所以实际上的高光时间应该是1956年征服者服役开始到苏联1965年开始装备T-64，如果把碎甲弹的应用范围扩大到步兵武器的话，那就是从1950开始算，因为碎甲弹这玩意最大的意义其实是挽救了大英疲软不堪的步兵反坦克武器，原本二战末期原计划开发出来打虎王的发射碎甲弹的120mm无座力炮在1949年服役，这玩意可以说是大英自1939年二战爆发以来获得过的体积最小、威力最大、反坦克效果最好的营连级反坦克武器了，可以轻松毁伤物理装甲厚度在130mm以下的装甲单位，在这之前带英的主力步兵营级反坦克武器是二磅和六磅......
