本曲是古尔德1963年为加拿大广播公司的电视特辑The Anatomy of a Fugue而写的，由四人演唱，钢琴或弦乐四重奏伴奏。格伦·古尔德很小的时候，就自认为最想成为一名作曲家。在他职业生涯的早期，他曾写道："在七十岁之前，我希望能够完成一些室内音乐，两三部交响乐，以及一部歌剧"。通过此曲我们可以领略古尔德的作曲风采。
